How To Know Is Real Silver? | OHANA BALI SILVER

Updated: Jul 24

Sterling silver is beautiful, timeless, and valuable—but how can you be sure it's the real deal? Whether you're buying new jewelry or checking an old piece, here are 5 simple methods to test if your silver is genuine.

1. Check the Hallmark Stamp (925)

The most common indicator is a small stamp or engraving on the jewelry.

Look for marks like:

  • 925

  • Sterling

  • S 925

These stamps usually appear on the inside of rings, back of pendants, or clasps of bracelets. At Ohana Bali Silver, all our pieces are guaranteed 925 sterling silver, clearly marked for authenticity.

2. Use a Magnet

Real silver is not magnetic. If your jewelry sticks strongly to a magnet, it might contain other metals or be silver-plated.Tip: Use a strong magnet from a hardware store for better results.

3. Rub with a Soft White Cloth

Gently rub the piece with a soft white cloth. Real silver will usually leave black marks on the cloth this is due to natural tarnishing (oxidation), a sign of purity.

4. The Ice Cube Test

Place an ice cube on the silver surface. Real silver conducts heat rapidly, so the ice should melt quickly. It’s a fun and easy way to test your silver at home!

5. Professional Testing

Still unsure? Bring your jewelry to a trusted silver expert or local jeweler. They may use an acid test or XRF scanner to give you accurate results. At Ohana Bali Silver, we’re happy to help check the authenticity of your jewelry
